Why Graduate Study in Statistics at Penn?

There are as many reasons for choosing a graduate program as there are students, but four important factors seem to have influenced almost all of the students who have chosen the University of Pennsylvania for their graduate study in statistics.

WHARTON

At Penn, the Department of Statistics is part of the Wharton School which is internationally acknowledged as one of the finest business schools in the world. For example, Wharton has repeatedly ranked NUMBER ONE in the Business Week rankings of business schools.

INTELLECTUAL DIVERSITY

Our department is centered in the Wharton School and much of the department's research agenda is driven by questions from finance, economics, and public policy, but our department is also the one department of statistics for all of the University of Pennsylvania. Our students regularly work on problems from School of Medicine (which is one of the nation's finest) as well as other divisions of the University, including the Annenberg School of Communication, the School of Engineering, and other departments of the University, including the departments of Mathematics, Economics, and Sociology.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL

Graduate study in statistics is a stepping stone to a career, and graduates from the department of statistics have an outstanding placement record. The Wharton School has thousands of alumni who serve as leaders in almost all areas of the national and international economy. These alumni are a tremendous resource for Wharton graduates, and historically our students have had their choice of careers in academia, financial services, pharmaceutical development, marketing, medical research, and public policy.

PHILADELPHIA: CULTURAL AND INTELLECTUAL CENTER

Philadelphia is known all over the world as the birthplace of American independence, but Philadelphia is also a vibrant modern city with one of the world's leading orchestras, the largest collection of Rodin statues outside of France, and two of America's greatest art museums, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Barnes Collection. Philadelphia is also a diverse city with great restaurants in all price ranges, national sports franchises, and perhaps the most active live theater scene outside of New York City.
